How Ransomware on One Device Can Spread Across Shared Drives™

Google Drive for desktop can run in one of two modes: Mirror files, which keeps a full local copy of everything, or Stream files, which represents cloud content locally as pointers and only downloads a file’s actual content when it’s opened (Google Drive Help). Stream mode is efficient, but it also means the operating system treats those pointers like real files. If ransomware on that computer encrypts what it sees as a normal file, the sync process reads that encryption as an edit and pushes it up to Google Drive™ like any other change; there’s no native step that pauses to ask whether the “edit” looks suspicious before it syncs.

This becomes an organization-wide problem specifically because of how Shared Drives™ work. A Shared Drive™ isn’t tied to one person’s account; anyone with access can reach it through their own synced device. That means a single infected computer, if it has access to several Shared Drives™, can push encrypted, corrupted versions into every one of them, affecting everyone with access, not just the device’s owner.

Does Google Have Native Protection for This?

Partially, and it’s improved recently. As of March 2026, Google’s ransomware detection and file restoration for Drive is generally available, and its coverage explicitly extends to “My Drive, Shared with me files, and files on internal or external shared drives” (Google Workspace Help), so Shared Drives™ are no longer the unprotected gap they once were.

Two limits are worth knowing. It restores files after ransomware is detected; it doesn’t revoke the infected device’s or app’s access, so the same machine can cause the same problem again until that’s addressed separately. And detection specifically, as opposed to restoration, is available only on certain Workspace plan tiers.
